Dex (Dennis Vander Houwen) entertains with card manipulation, coins and historical stories of gambling in the ‘Wild West’. He is our house magician/card expert and is here on select nights of dinner service and during many special events. With over 30 years of experience performing magic and comedy, Dex specializes in close-up and tableside magic. He also has a sit-down, cabaret-style show which is available for private events.
When not performing here at The Fort, Dennis is a clinical educator, teaching medical students vital communication skills as part of the University of Colorado’s Center for Advancing Professional Excellence (CAPE). Born in Eastern Washington (where his family had a small farm and orchards), Dennis served four years in the US Army stationed in Stuttgart, Germany and was deployed to the Gulf War as a combat photographer. After leaving the army, Dennis settled in Seattle, WA. He now lives in Centennial, CO with his wife, son and canine sidekick, Fezzik.
Dennis is the creator of ‘Tenkara Path’, a blog dedicated to his passion for ‘tenkara’ (a simple rod fishing technique originating from Japan). A ‘jack of all trades’, Dennis dabbles in bread baking, brewing, woodworking, foraging and all things ‘old school’. He is a lifelong student of history and is thrilled to be immersing himself in the Old West as a member of The Fort’s historical re-enactors.
